A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to chat with a potential client. These are always my favorite meetings because they ideas start flowing, the energy is high, and we determine if we are a fit or not. All of my meetings, whether in person or on the phone, include touching on my clients’ pain points and what’s worked as well as what hasn’t for their business. This client had lost count of how many agencies they had hired that delivered incredible results “on paper” but weren’t listening to the true problems — those engagements were not converting to people visiting and making purchases at their businesses.
“You ever shut the door quickly and pinch your fingers in it. It’s kind of been like that for us.”
Yes. I have. And I’ve also smashed my phone that I had in my jacket pocket that way (which is more painful, you can decide). We shared that laugh and I agreed. Marketing, in this sense, is so crazy similar to what it’s like to be out and about in the crazy dating world.
In the beginning, I primarily used third-party sites like Upwork, Freelancer and even Fiverr to find clients. I am so grateful it’s now more word of mouth opportunities through referrals or work I have done in the past. Much like dating, we go with the cheaper, faster solution, right? Like how many of your peers do you know who actually pay for the super swipes or legit dating sites? They pick the cheaper, or free, option.
That’s not to say they aren’t taking dating, or their apps seriously. And it’s not to say those looking to hire are taking a cheap way out by contracting through these sites. Admittedly, they’re great. They helped me inspire my creativity and desire to help others. But put it in this perspective.
Who do you trust more? The person you swiped right on 24 hours ago or the person your coworker introduces you to with a stellar acclamation? There’s no right or wrong answer. When you find a fit, you just know. The same goes for finding your perfect marketing consultant or agency.
I met my boyfriend through a dating app, Hinge , and I talk about it all. the. time. All the time. Of all the free dating apps I’ve ever used, this has been the best. My great experience and wonderful relationship back up my claim. My friends trust me. They trust I’m giving them a great app to check out. And they’re hopeful they’ll also find their match.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how you meet, it just matters that the connection is real, authentic, and honest. If you have that, you have the recipe for something pretty beautiful!
